Card Companies: Please Keep Things Fresh

Keeping it fresh.

That should be the motto of card companies nowadays. There are many ways the card companies are keeping it fresh. New innovations in card technology. New types of memorabilia. All are great and should continue. The only issue with these is that they come out in the same products every year. So I propose a solution.

Rotating products.

Besides the flagship product, the sell-well mid-end product and the ultra high end product, there needs to be more change in all the filler products. Every year we have Panini Limited, we have Upper Deck SPx, we have Topps Opening Day. Why can’t there be new, creative products put out to mix in with those others that are put out year after year…and then just rotate them. Put out SPx every other year, put out Limited every other year, you get what I’m saying. Replace those spots in a calendar with a new product and see what works. You can build more hype, you have more opportunity to innovate, and it creates an atmosphere that is less stale.

It’s just an idea. I hate to see product go the way of the Madden football games or just become more repetitive in nature. It seems like companies don’t want to retire certain products when they have long outstayed their welcome. This would be a good way to change that.

Preview: 2012-13 Upper Deck SP Game Used Hockey

A press release about 12-13 Upper Deck SP Game Used hockey from Upper Deck came out today:

Carlsbad, CA (January 15, 2013) Just days before the puck drops on a new season for the NHL®, Upper Deck is pleased to release 2012-13 NHL® SP Game-Used; a super premium hockey card release that collectors are eager to experience. The product has been revamped from years prior and has a lower price point per pack, but does not compromise on the quality cards that have made it a hobby favorite. Collectors can find five packs in every box that contain at least one autograph card and four other memorabilia or autograph cards.

“SP Game-Used has been given a nice makeover that we think collectors are going to love,” said Josh Zusman, Upper Deck’s Hockey brand manager. “We have challenged our teams to come up with compelling new inserts that will bring collectors closer to the game and we believe they have succeeded. By improving the value collectors can find in packs, we think they will have a much more exciting pack-opening experience this year!”

There are a bevy of new insert sets that will have collectors clamoring to crack these packs. First up are the “Draft Day Marks” autograph cards that profile talented rookies and veterans on the day they were drafted. Collectors can chase these cards to put together the entire set that will spell out the player’s last name. Rookie cards have always been a staple in the product, but now there is better collectability with Rookie Cards limited to each player’s jersey number with a twist being that the last card in each print run is a one-of-one-autograph for young stars like Chris Kreider (New York Rangers) and Sven Baertschi (Calgary Flames). And with “Supreme Patches,” “Supreme Sticks,” and “Supreme Skates” collectors find out first hand where SP Game-Used gets it’s name as they can find game-used memorabilia cards with very compelling pieces of jerseys, sticks and skates players used in actual games. The skate cards in particular are going to be an exciting new addition for collectors as it marks the first time Upper Deck has produced cards like these. And to create some serious high-end buzz, collectors can also find rare 1-of-1 NHL® Shield variation cards that include the NHL® logo from game-used jerseys on the card.

One of the most unique additions to the SP Game-Used brand for this season is an artifact used in Games 3, 4 and 6 of the 2012 NHL® Stanley Cup® Final. Upper Deck was able to procure the actual net from the goal from those games and will be including special Los Angeles Kings and New Jersey Devils cards with swatches of the net embedded in them. Special autograph variations will include authentic signatures on swatches derived from the leather net skirt from key players in the series like Adam Henrique, Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Drew Doughty, Martin Brodeur and Wayne Gretzky who dropped the ceremonial puck before Game 3. Also look for ten different 1-of-1 “Jumbo” packs cards featuring large swatches from the oversized NHL® shield patch taken from the net skirt.

Just in time for the start of the NHL® season, Upper Deck is pleased to release 2012-13 NHL® SP Game-Used which is currently available on store shelves.

Hey, it’s about time Upper Deck changed up the product after the horrible offering last season. Let’s hope these changes really do enhance the product for collectors.

You can find this product online at DA Card World for about $107 . You can also find more information including the checklist at Cardboard Connection.

Group Break: 2007 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection Baseball Case Break

Group Break as Low as $5!

I have received a case of 2007 Upper Deck Ultimate Collection baseball. I would LOVE to do a group break with my readers and the product. This product is loaded with hits from just about every team out there. At 3 hits per pack and 1 base, 4 packs per box, and 4 boxes per case, that equates to 48 total hits.

You can find some sweet rookies autographs like Tim Lincecum, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Ryan Braun, Josh Hamilton, Adam Lind, Michael Bourn, Delmon Young, Hunter Pence, Troy Tulowitzki, Billy Butler, and more. Just check out this full checklist. There are a couple redemptions in the product, I apologize if one is pulled for you as they are expired. I will send something to replace the expired redemption or you can have the expired redemption yourself, your choice.

Read all the product details here at Cardboard Connection on all the types of cards you can hit. Tons of sweet autographs, patch cards, etc.

So what I’ve done here is painstakingly counted all of the cards in the set and found out the percentage you pull a card based on the team. That is then correlated into a price for each team. Price includes PayPal fees, shipping, and cards you pull. If you get 0 cards (including base), I’ll send you something for joining, probably some packs of cards or something. You are welcome to buy as many teams as you wish. Break will be done simultaneously live on YouTube and BlogTV at a date to be determined (depending on when it fills).

Cards with multiple teams will be randomized unless someone owns the majority of the teams on the card.

Preview: 2011-12 Upper Deck Exquisite Basketball

Yes, you heard that right. 2011-12 Exquisite basketball from Upper Deck will be released this season, and in just 8 days. Unbelievable, you think. Well it’s true, and we have all the details for you passionate hardwood collectors out there.

Releasing on October 16, 2012, a day before my birthday (wink-wink Upper Deck), the high end favorite makes its return debut. Featuring 5 autographs per box, including one rookie autograph numbered to 199, this product packs a ton of ink into a small 6 pack box.

One of my favorite parts of the product is that at least one of the autographs is an Upper Deck Black autographed card. Upper Deck Black was one of those brands that just about every collector enjoyed, and it’s returning for a limited time in this product. Another cool thing, is like the football version, you’ll be able to find the Exquisite dimensions cards which add a very cool 3D look to the autographed cards.

Exquisite is definitely back in a big way, however, I’m not seeing any actual used memorabilia in this product, so that kinda bugs me a bit.

At $870 a box, it’s a HUGE gamble for a product that hasn’t been along in years, but has a great name behind it. If you open it, I wish you the best of luck.

Check out more about 2012 Exquisite basketball on Cardboard Connection.
