Preview: 2013 Bowman Baseball

Topps is back with one of the most anticipated releases every season, 2013 Bowman Baseball.

2013bowmanbb5

The thing I think is really cool about Bowman are the Black Collection autographs. These cards will be signed in silver and the cards are numbered to 25. Trust me on this, these cards look beautiful in person!

Of course with Bowman, collectors are always after the Bowman Chrome autographs. These feature some of the best prospects in the game as well as possible sleeper prospects in the future.

An interesting new set added this year are the Dual Franchise Refractor Autographs. These cards feature the top 2 propsects in an organization and are numbered to 25 or less! Also be on the lookout for Future Game Relics, these cards are from the 2012 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, and are numbered to 25.

Each box contains 24 packs with 10 cards. In each box, it will contain 1 autograph card per box.

You can find the product at DA Card World for around $70 when it releases on May 8, 2013.

You can also find the checklist on Cardboard Connection.

Preview: 2012 Panini Prizm Baseball

Topps decided this product was so good in Football and Basketball that they should make it in Baseball, so 2012 Panini Prizm is coming to all the Baseball collectors!

2012prizmbb9

The first thing collectors should look for are the Rookie Prizm Autographs. You can find rookies such as Matt Harvey, Yoenis Cespedes, Trevor Bauer and others.

Something cool you can find in Prizm Baseball will be the Elite Extra Edition Autograph Prizms. These cards will be numbered to 25 and will feature top prospects such as Joey Gallo, Addison Russell, Dylan Bundy and more. I think it’s a neat idea to add more value by giving an insert set like this instead of making a separate product. There will also be Elite Extra Edition Gold Prizms numbered to 10 which will include the 2012 #1 overall pick Carlos Correa.

And of course, with Prizm, the big draw are the gold parallels, or in this case, the Rookie Relevance Gold Prizms. These cards will be numbered to 10 and feature rookies such as Bryce Harper, Yu Darvish and others.

Each box contains 20 packs with 6 cards per pack. In each box, it will contain 2 autograph cards per box.

You can find the product at DA Card World for around $100 when it releases April 17, 2013.

Review: 2012 Panini Prizm Football

Well, the popularity of Prizm is spreading like wildfire across the sports card landscape after the wildly successful Prizm basketball has been heating up the land. I believe Prizm is the new Chrome, one that really makes an identity for Panini. Just like when you think Chrome equals Topps, Prizm equals Panini. (Plus it has some nice alliteration.) That is a tough thing to say after the first year of the product but the marketing has been fabulous and the collector response has been even better. With it now reaching football, why don’t we see what you can find with the improvements?

Design:4 and half stars blue

This is more or less going to be a copy job of the basketball version, because well, it’s practically the same design. But I’ll change a few things. “The design on this product is a design style that will last a long time for this product. The look of the etchings throughout the cards is something you normally only see in another specific product that is a bit similar. The same with the coating, although I much prefer this coating than that of the competitors. It doesn’t smell, it doesn’t warp the cards to bending (at least not yet) and it has a much smoother, almost glass like feel to them. The design is practically flawless. My only issue is that it is possibly TOO shiny or reflective. It’s really a spectacular level of reflectiveness on the product. But the “Prizms” as they call it, “Prizmatics” for myself, are beautiful all the way from the regulars to the golds. Bravo.” I also want to point out that the red “prizms” are beautifully done with their die-cut work and look great. It sort of reminds me of BoChro meeting StarQuest from the 90s. I love the parallels, but I would like to see some numbering on the reds. The regular prizms are fine un-numbered, but the reds I would like to see numbered. We know they are one per box, but numbering does add a bit of value. I would also like to see a thinner border for next year, but that’s just me.

Checklist:4 and half stars blue

Yes, the rookie class is phenomenal. That will make this product for a long time. In it’s similarities, to another product from Topps, it does everything right that product does, but more. See, I often harp about too many rookie autographs or no name rookies, and all that mumbo jumbo. Yes, I pulled a no-name rookie from my box, but Prizm also features some veteran autograph content unlike it’s competitor. To me, that makes it stand out just a little bit more. Yeah, the Owen Daniels autograph doesn’t sell for much, but this is a guy who plays weekly, a skill position, and has been to two Pro-Bowls already. Prizm has that veteran love that I like.

Value:4 stars blue

Naturally, you are going to compare this product with its direct competition and similar products, which is rightfully so. It is priced higher at release than it’s competitors and now sits at $130 at DA Card World. Is it worth that price? Well it is a hot product, with a hot rookie class, and the possibility for some big hits. At only two autographs though, and limited colored parallels, it is a toss up. You’ll either feast or famine with this one at that price. I would like to see it similar in price to its competition, but I’m also guessing there is a smaller supply of this product as well. I thought the product added in the fun factor, so I would go for at least one box.

Overall:4 and half stars blue

Panini has a hit on their hands, just like was stated in the Prizm basketball review. This is going to be a product that will come out for years to come and will be just as highly anticipated, if not more, than their Contenders brand (hint: that review is coming up!).  The design is nicely done with their new technology and I love what they have going for it. The checklist is more than just rookies, which is something I can truly appreciate when it comes to hits. I may have hit a $5 veteran autograph, but at least I know the player! And finally, the value can be there, but I would like to see it closer to the competition if possible.

Thanks again to Panini for providing this product for review. You can find them online on their official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.

Here are some of what we pulled from the box:

Review: 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball

2012-13 Panini Prizm is the newest product from the Panini basketball team that features a “chrome” like appearance with the shine and etching that makes a product exciting to go through. Prizm is the perfect name for the product and it looks to be a great new addition. Each box contains 2 autographs and contains some of the new Prizm parallels, or Prizmatics as I call them. Want to see what you can pull in a box? Well look no further.

Design: 4 and half stars blue

The design on this product is a design style that will last a long time for this product. Bravo.

Checklist:4 and half stars blue

The checklist sort of surprised me. 300 total cards. With Panini coming out with their “staple” brand later this year, the one where you want to build the sets and everything, was this really necessary? I think this SHOULD be the flagship brand as it is that good and the set up is that good as well. A product featured with rookies, stars, and legends of the game. A little bit of everything for everyone. The autographed rookie checklist was interesting, and I would like to see more veteran autographs but the double rookie class probably put a damper on that. Either way, it’s what you want and what you’d expect.

Value:4 stars blue

The value is definitely there in this product. Could it be better? Absolutely. Right now you can find the product for $100 at DA Card World. Some of the highlights include some of the top rookie autographs, superstar autographs, and the “Prizmatic” cards. The parallels are selling quite well on the secondary market, especially the gold prizms. That raises a question though, why not more colors? Let’s use ROY G. BIV here and get all sorts of colors of parallels. Putting together a rainbow is always fun, but the lower numbered cards always add a bit of value. Imagine a gold prizm auto of Kyrie Irving…sweet right? Parallel the autographed cards more than just the regular parallel to 25. I would love to see some additions to the product that include some more color! It would break up that bit of monotony with just a lot of really silvery and shiny cards.

Overall:4 and half stars blue

Overall, Panini Prizm is going to be the breakout hit and maybe the basketball product of the year from the company. The design is beautifully done, and many argue better than that of it’s competitors. The checklist is expansive and good enough to build sets and the perfect number of inserts for a product this size. The parallels are a great addition to value, but I’d like to see a bit more in the veteran side, but the rookie class makes that difficult with “double rookies” from Panini. Either way though, I REALLY look forward to seeing this product next year.

Thanks to Panini for providing this product for review. You can find them online at their official site, blog, Twitter, and Facebook. Give them a shout.

Preview: 2012 Bowman Chrome Baseball

Please join me in the Bowman prayer:

Our Topps,
Who art in NYC,
Baseball be thy name,
Thy prospects come,
Thy will be chrome,
In our box as it is in production.
Give us this day,
Our daily pack,
And forgive our anger,
As we forgive our busts.
And lead us not into scrubs,
But deliver us the superfractors.
And thy is the blue, red, and gold refractors forever,
Amen.

October 17th, 2012, is the day of the prospectors sabbath. It also happens to fall on my birthday. It’s the day that 2012 Bowman Chrome baseball is set to release, showcasing some of the best up and coming talent in the game. One of the most collectible sets for rookies of all time, it’s back with everything prospectors need to either make or break their banks.

Each box contains 18 packs per box with 4 cards per pack. You will also find 1 autograph per box with every third box containing an extra autograph. You will no longer find USA baseball autographs this year, but Topps has added a couple of cool additions.

My favorite addition is the Legends in the Making die-cut autographs, featuring some of the best young talent in the game with a sweet die-cut design and autograph. While the full checklist isn’t out, it’s rumored you may find Albert Pujols, Felix Hernandez, Yoenis Cespedes, and Buster Posey amongst others. I love the addition of some solid veteran autographs in a product, and while limited, I like the idea here.

You’ll also be able to find the return of Bowman Black autographs from other products and Future Game patches and patch autographs. Again, while limited, I really love these additions compared to the typical cards you get in the box.

Your typical box is again lots of colorful refractors and an autograph or two. The refractors really haven’t changed all that much, so you know what you are getting into with those. Each parallel is numbered lower than the next one going from standard refractors all the way down to superfractors. That formula hasn’t, and will probably never, change.

So get ready to take a day off from work and open your case or boxes of this product. I already have the day off since I do turn 27 years old, so hopefully I’ll be able to find a box somewhere to open at a price around $67.

You can find out more information about 2012 Bowman Chrome on Cardboard Connection.

And don’t forget, you can get Blue Wave refractors through wrapper redemption once again this year.
