Preview: 2012 Topps Football

The Topps flagship is about to be released for football and fans of the gridiron are getting excited. And they should be, this looks to be one of the better Topps flagship releases in recent memory with some of the great additions and changes to the format of the product.

First off, a huge relief is that 2012 Topps football features a different design than baseball. That is HUGE for me. I hate recycled designs and seeing Topps put this kind of effort into the product this year already gives me a reason to pick up some product. I know you guys at Topps occasionally stop by here, so make sure whoever made that decision gets a beer on me.

The great rookie class will certainly help this product out as well. Securing the rights for autographs from the top rookies in the draft, this product will feature rookie autographs from future stars like Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and other football prospects. With single autos, dual autos, letter autos, and a ton of relics with the new rookies and vets, this product should be a fun break at the jumbo level if you are into hits. And with minis, sketch cards, and more, the inserts look fun as well.

Speaking of hits, you’ll also find quarterback trading cards embedded with manufactured materials like medals, coins, and even championship belts from certain Super Bowl MVPs. That’s where the fun of getting hits stops for me. I’ve never been a fan of these manufactured relics, and probably never will be. It’s just a portion of collectors that feels this way, but it puts a damper on the product for me. At least this is the only football product of the year featuring these items. Well that we know of.

Each hobby box nets you 36 packs with 10 cards per pack. You’ll only get one autograph or relic in a standard hobby box but 2 autographs and a relic in a jumbo. Jumbos get a little pricier, but if you’re opening the product I would go for the jumbo packs.

8/8 is the date, I bet you can’t wait to break 2012 Topps football, don’t hate.

(I’m a poet, and I didn’t even know it.)
