Review: 2013 Panini Prestige Football

The second NFL product of the season has been upon us from Panini and it is ready to grab the headlines showcasing the new rookie class. Prestige is one of those products you see year after year, but you get excited for it as it signifies the beginning of the season. Usually one of the first products with autographs, memorabilia, and players in their new uniforms, it is a great time to begin prospecting for the upcoming season. Want to see what you can pull in a box? Let’s check it out.

Design:3 and half stars blue

Pros: Inserts look great. Great use of acetate. Nice use of foil.

Cons: Same designs as last year. Huge lettering. Rookie photo choices (Just home jerseys?).

Ideas: I’m looking for something more innovative nowadays. Collectors have seen the same thing over and over again, and in some cases repeats from last year. The diecut acetate cards were awesome. Some of the foil techniques were great. I’d like to see a more innovative base card in a product like this.

Checklist:4 stars blue

Pros: Rookie in their NFL uniforms. Updated roster information.

Cons: A ton of cards of the same rookies. A lot of rookies, period.

Ideas: Knowing the rookie class wasn’t as good this year, it would have been a great time to expand the checklist with some left over inventory from last year.

Value:4 stars blue

Pros: $82 at DA Card World. Four hits per box. Top rookies and still some veterans sprinkled inside. Leon Sandcastle autographs.

Cons: Four hits per box may be all rookies. The checklist is rough for a non-hyped rookie season.

Ideas: Knowing the rookie class wouldn’t be as good and in the interest of trying to sell more product, the Leon Sandcastle gimmick was nice, but not enough. A more veteran laden product might be beneficial until the rookies can showcase themselves on the field and develop a following in a year like this.

Overall:4 stars blue

Overall, the product is interesting this year from Panini comparatively to last year. Much of that comparison lends itself to the rookie class which prospectors deem to be sub-par. However, that can still change as soon as the season starts and into the season. However, that does not bode well for early season products. Perhaps product order could have changed a bit. But there are some things I didn’t like and some that I loved. Everyone is different, but I think my thoughts have some merit. The repetitive designs and the “all rookie” hits are a couple things. I also found some nice surprises like the acetate inserts and the price of the product. To each their own.

Thanks to Panini America for providing this product for review. You can find them online on their official site, blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

You can find the full checklist of this product at Cardboard Connection.

I don’t think I made a video of this break as I was traveling, but subscribe anyway for break videos.

And here are some of the cards. Buccaneers heavy because I can!

2012 Panini NFL Player of the Day Contest – Week 7

First, we would like to formally congratulate Shane K. for winning Week 6 of the Panini NFL Player of the Day contest here on Sports Card Blog. He netted some sweet swag for the victory, including a MJD collectible item and some packs to go along with it. Everyone else who beat me or got in on the bonus entry has been entered for the grand prizes, which I scored a little low, but gave a bit of a challenge. Shane K. even guessed the exact number of points, so big congrats to that.

NFL Week 5 SCB Rookie of the Week

Every week we have been recapping the best rookie performances of the week and showcasing some sweet trading cards you can find on the market of that player. Except for last week, who would of thought a kicker would have been the best rookie of the week? Only the “Legatron”.

This week, no kickers or punters. We had two performances in the NFL that stood out above the rest from first year players. Alfred Morris of the Washington Redskins ran all over the field in his game. But that just wasn’t enough to beat the man who passed and drove his team to victory in the final minutes of the game.

Andrew Luck is our Week 5 NFL Rookie of the Week. The first pick of the 2012 NFL Draft beat the Green Bay Packers 30-27 in a real shootout towards the end. With his team down by 5 with under a minute to go, he was able to drive his team down for a score to win the game. 362 yards and 2 TDs against the Packers is no easy feat, and the victory sealed a signature moment in Luck’s young career.

With no Darelle Revis on the Jets, can Luck duplicate that performance this week?

His rookie cards took a turn up for the first time in awhile, but with already high prices, he needs more performances like that to take it to another level.

NFL Week 3 SCB Rookie of the Week

With a wild week 3 of games, some for better reasons than others, there were a ton of standouts on both offense and defense this week. With solid play from a ton of rookies, it was a difficult pick for our NFL Rookie of the Week.

Our pick had to be T.Y. Hilton of the Indianapolis Colts. The wide receiver had a great performance in the loss to the Jaguars. He was able to haul in four passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Despite the team not being able to pull out a victory, he stepped up with the loss of Austin Collie and should be getting more targets the rest of the season.

This is his 2012 Topps Platinum autographed rookie card. After a big game like that, his card prices have jumped a bit, and there should be a little more ceiling in his cards if he puts up another big week. The Austin Collie situation also gives this more room to move up, so grab them up now in case he has another big week.
