Preview: 2012-13 Panini Past & Present Basketball

Panini has renewed a product that collectors liked so much last year in 2012-13 Panini Past & Present Basketball.

2013pastpresentbk4

One set that collectors should look for is the Elusive Ink set. This set will feature some of the toughest Autographs to find in the sport.

Another interesting autograph set will be the Modern Marks autographs. It’s a very clean design and Panini says it’s improved the design even more and the autograph list will be expanded and better for this years product! Also look for the Gamers patch cards. As you can see a little further down the page, these cards have a sharp design and could feature some sick patches of player such as Kobe Bryant.

And of course, collectors should be looking for the rookie cards. Make sure you look for top rookies like Kyrie Irving, Damian Lillard, Anthony Davis and others.

Each box contains 20 packs with 6 cards per pack. In each box, it will contain 3 autograph cards per box.

You can find the product at DA Card World for around $90 when it releases May 1, 2013.

Review: 2012 Panini Totally Certified Football

One of Panini’s newer products has come back this year in 2012 Panini Totally Certified football. It’s one of the Panini products that is loaded with hits for the collector that likes autographs and game used memorabilia trading cards. With the hot rookie class this season, it has surely been a hit amongst collectors with some big hits coming out of the product. Want to see what we pulled? Check out the review and pictures below.

Design: 4 stars blue

The one thing I have always loved about Totally Certified has been that background. The colors are bold, there is some sort of shininess to it, and it really makes the players stand out on the card designs. My one real issue with that is…that’s really all it is. Across their inserts for rookie autographs, base memorabilia cards, it is basically all of the same thing. Maybe a little more variety could go a long way with some of the insert sets. I love the base, don’t get me wrong. In fact, a design like that would be fun to collect in a more base-centric product. Just a little more oomph is needed in the inserts.

Checklist: 4 and half stars blue

Hot rookies? Check. Veteran laden? Check. Sweet cards of rookies and veterans? Check. Really, how could this checklist get any better besides more veteran ink in the product? Not much. This product is often packed with some good content so I’m happy with just about every pull in the product. Still, needs more veteran ink though.

Value: 4 and half stars blue

This was actually tough determining doing 4 or 4.5 stars. Currently, the product sits for just north of $100 at DA Card World. I received six hits in my box including 3 autographs. First, six hits for $100 is genuinely a steal in today’s hobby. Can’t really beat that. The rookie class is strong so it will deliver value in itself with a number of cards. Chalk that up to a great season. One on-card autograph per box…well I didn’t get that part. Patches? Yup. HRX video cards? Uh huh. My main issue is still the lack of veteran ink. You know what…I originally had 4 stars, let’s make it 4.5. 6 hits for $100 is a good deal today.

Overall: 4 and half stars blue

Overall, I think Totally Certified has taken a step in the right direction. A couple more hits, a lower price tag, and more veteran content in terms of memorabilia. It has a little bit of something for everyone and with the number of hits you get per box, it is well worth the price of admission, especially this year. I’d like to see a little improvement on design of inserts, but other than that, good work.

Once again, a big thank you goes out to Panini America for providing this box for review. You can find them on their official site, blog, Facebook, and Twitter.

Review: 2012-13 Panini Limited Hockey

A Panini tradition for several years now, the Limited brand continues in the hockey arena with its usual one pack per box and multiple hits per pack formula. It’s that quick hit that many collectors enjoy breaking into every season to see what they can pull. In this shortened hockey season without new rookies, it is one of those products that may be your only hockey break of the season. So let’s get down to it and see what we pulled in our box of Panini Limited hockey for 2012-13.

Design: 4 stars blue

I actually REALLY like the design aspects in this product, except for one thing, the manufactured patch autographs. I was going to give this 4 1/2, but I had to knock it down because of two manu-patch autographed cards. One of them, the autograph already has some pen bleed on it which is disappointing and one of the main reasons I don’t care for that style of card creation. Other than that, the base designs look great with the color photo of the player and the sepia background. The inserts are solid as well and the other hit look good too. Great design work, but I just hate manu-patches.

Checklist: 4 stars blue

To me, there is a benefit of not having many rookies in the sets this year and that is you can find more veteran content. That has resulted in a pretty decent box we received of this product. Tyson Barrie is a solid defenseman prospect, so that isn’t too shabby. But the highlights are a Hall of Famer game used piece and a future Hall of Famer autograph. One rookie hit, one current veteran hit, and one legend hit. Panini does well mixing in all of these into their product run and it was cool seeing it all come together in one box of a product that usually has quite a few rookie hits. Then again, no new rookies either like Yak, and it’s kinda disappointing. But blame the NHLPA!

Value: 4 stars blue

I believe the box originally retailed at $100 like the typical Limited products, but right now this one is currently sitting at $82 over at DA Card World. Not bad price at all for this product and what I would love to see the product hit the streets at. Panini has eliminated its MAPP policy, so maybe we’ll start seeing better opening value the first few weeks. But as I stated in the checklist area, we received some pretty decent cards in our box with Iginla, Fuhr, and a solid prospect. Overall, I think this box held up its end of the bargain. Others have been worse, but I’ve seen better too. Limited is risky like that.

Overall:4 stars blue

Overall. A solid four stars. This isn’t your typical four star review as Limited has shown many positives this year. Next year will be interesting though with the double rookie class, but I’m enjoying the product this year for what it is. The design is well done, but I still don’t like those manu-patch autographs. At least Panini has limited their use across the board and you only really see them in two products (Dominion). The checklist is good for this season and really is a testament to what I believe rookies have done to the hobby. Watering down boxes with rookies has been a problem, but this box shows the good of a variety of players. Which not only improves the breaking experience, but adds some better immediate value. We all aren’t prospectors or care for waiting out rookies, so this is a nice change of pace.

Once again, a thank you goes out to Panini America for providing this product to review. You can find them online on their official site, blog, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.
