April 2012 Sports Card Releases

April showers bring…more products! April is here and that means it’s time to see what is being released this month and my thoughts on the products. Rating is always my excitement level and the products link to my full previews. Ready?

2011 Panini Limited Baseball – April 25, 2012 – $100 – 8/10

One of my favorite baseball products of all time returns and brings some sweet designs back to life once again in this product. Featuring players from Panini’s MLBPA and Baseball HOF licenses, Panini is bringing it back old school, 2005 old school.

2011 Panini Prime Cuts Baseball – April 11, 2012 – $250 – 9/10

A high price tag, for the return of a great high end product from Panini. Just like Limited, but on a bigger level, Prime Cuts returns as well with some more amazing cards, just like where they left off in 2005.

2012 Topps Gypsy Queen Baseball – April 18, 2012 – $100 – 9/10

The hit product from last year returns again with what made the product that good last year plus a few new surprises. Definitely worth checking out again this year.

2012 Topps Museum Collection Baseball – April 4, 2012 – $169 – 8/10

Some say it looks like Marquee, but I say it looks pretty good. This new offering from Topps in baseball this season could be one of the game changers we’ve been looking for. Let’s wait for the box breaks to be sure…

None this month? Ah!

2012 Upper Deck Football – April 24, 2012 – $95 – 6.5/10

The newest NCAA football set from Upper Deck is set to arrive and features 3 autographs per box and a ton of rookies with some great surprises.

Full preview coming soon.

2011 Panini Playbook Football – April 6, 2012 – $200 – 9/10

This product actually looks very cool. A booklet card per box of 4 cards with some amazing patches and great looking designs. It definitely should be a collector favorite.

2011 Panini National Treasures Football – April 4, 2012 – $400 – 9/10

It’s Panini’s turn to distribute their high end product in National Treasures football. Once again it returns as a high-end collector favorite with great rookies, veterans, and legends packed into this product.

2012 Leaf Valiant Draft Football – April 28, 2012 – ? – ?

Full preview coming soon.

2011-12 Upper Deck SP Game Used Hockey – April 12, 2012 – $180 – 7.5/10

SPGU returns for another season. With some nice new additions to this one hit per pack product, we hope that those additions will take away from plethora of common jersey cards that are found in this product.

2011-12 Panini Contenders Hockey – April 25, 2012 – $108 – 9/10

Updated and improved, Panini Contenders hockey brings you the Contenders feel but with better hits at a lower price. How could you complain about that?

2011-12 Panini Elite Hockey – April 11, 2012 – $120 – 8/10

Elite finally comes to hockey and Panini has put together a creative set for you to collect. With some recognizable designs from the Elite brand and some fresh new ideas, this product will be fun for collectors.

Wow, it looks like I have a lot of work to do previewing these products and it also looks like Panini is going to have a solid April. We’ll see what happens! Check us out for a lot of previews coming up this month for the products we haven’t looked at yet.

Preview: 2011 Leaf Metal Draft Baseball

As much as I don’t care for prospecting, it has become a huge thing for baseball collectors looking to make a quick buck – or lose it all. With it gaining steam every season and the media making a big deal of these up and coming names, Leaf is right there bringing you some on-card autographs of some of the most highly sought prospects out there.

There are over 80 different prospect autographs you can pull from this product with big prospecting names like Anthony Rendon, Manny Machado, Bubba Starling, and Trevor Bauer. While I can not tell you a thing about any of these prospects, the prices for these autographs alone speak volumes on what scouts and collectors alike think of these players.

The interesting addition this year is the possibility to find autographs of Ichiro Suzuki in this product. Ichiro has signed an exclusive deal with Leaf for autographs of this Japanese superstar to appear in Leaf products. I can’t imagine the money Brian Gray, owner of Leaf, threw at Ichiro but it will be worth it for collectors to find his first autographs in a product in 6 years.

You will find 6 autographs per box. There are parallels of each card as well numbered to 99, 25, and 1 so if you hit a prospect autograph of one of the parallels, especially the highly touted prospects, it should bring in some extra cash for the prospectors.

While I thought this product wasn’t to release until next week, it looks like it released a little earlier than I thought, so I apologize. But you can find this product now for around $85.

Preview: 2011 Leaf Sports Icons Cut Signature Edition

Leaf is bringing back it’s overly popular cut signature product from the past couple of years with this year’s installment of 2011 Leaf sports Icons Cut Signature Edition. This product is always extremely hot off the shelves with high end collectors scouring the hobby stores and internet for their chance at some of the most sought after sports cut autographs ever made.

With cut signatures from names such as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Muhammed Ali, and Walter Payton, you can see why collectors pay the big bucks for this product every year. The usually stout checklist provides cut autographs from deceased legends and other living legends – and not so much legends – from the past and present.

With every product, not every box is going to be a winner, so you may find yourself pulling something less than desirable, but the checklist overall is usually pretty solid when put all together. You will find beautifully set autographs, encapsulated by Beckett, at extremely low print runs.

Each box contains one cut signature or a dual cut signature from an icon in sports whether it’s baseball, football, or even boxing. This product has a wide variety in it that should be loved by any true hardcore sports fan and collector.

This product will hit stores on October 21, 2011, and retails around $100.
