Acetate Card of the Day: 2007-08 Upper Deck Ice Cam Ward Glacial Graphs

Man, that is a long title.

In case you are new to the blog, I am a huge fan of cards made with acetate or whatever they are made of that makes them see-through. I have always loved see-through cards and I love to collect cards of my favorite teams and players made this way.

My next installment is this 2007-08 Upper Deck Ice Cam Ward Glacial Graphs autographed card. You can see where the card is autographed, you can see through the card to the white thing on the other side, although I don’t remember where I took that photo.

I love the design of this card because while the top and bottom isn’t see through, the middle part which makes it “glacial” because you can see through it like ice, is autographed. I also like how Upper Deck has the photo of the player over the see-through spot which gives it some extra depth when looking at the card in person, almost like a shadow. If you turn the card over, you see the reverse image of the player while seeing the autograph from the other side.

No one really does the see-through cards anymore, but Upper Deck usually has an insert or two which goes back to this sort of design. I know Panini Contenders had one see-through subset this year, but I think it should have been designed more like this. And actually, I just came up with a great design concept for that specific insert set including the acetate component. If you want to know, you know where to find me!

I have a couple of see-through cards in my CheckOutMyCards account from back in the early 2000s, so when I get them sent out to me I will make sure I show you some more of my new favorites. Until then, if you have any acetate cards of the players or teams I collect, let me know! I’ll gladly take them off your hands.

Contest Winnings Mail Day

As I state in the below video, I normally don’t do mail days unless there is something really nice in there. I mean, who wants to see some common jersey or rookie autograph no one has heard of. I’ll keep my mail day videos to be something special to look at. This time is one of those times.

In case you can’t view the above video, here is how I won this bad boy. Sports Card Forum held a VIP Contest for it’s VIP members and had it sponsored by Panini. The prize was well worth how in depth this contest was. Let’s talk about the contest first. The contest involved the entire Stanley Cup playoffs. Every game each day I had to guess one person who would score a goal. Every game. That’s a lot of research and commitment. I knew I had it in me, I mean, I’m a hockey fan and love the NHL Playoffs. I think it’s the best playoff system in sports next to the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Anyway, long story short, I won with 36 total goals correctly guessed over the course of the playoffs. Second place finished with 33. It was a long battle in which I was victorious. And to the victor goes the spoils.

This is not a PC card but will be used to get a PC card or towards my box breaking fund for the site. I wish I could give it away again, but I can’t afford to right now.

So again, I would like to thank Sports Card Forum and Panini for holding this contest. This is one of the nicest  1 of 1 cards I’ve ever had in my possession. Here are some pictures for those who can’t view YouTube at work, don’t worry, I got you guys covered.

Panini: Madden 12 Hall of Fame Edition to Feature Autographed Cards

If you’re a video game fan, you know the importance of the date that Madden comes out. I know that everyone wants to see 2K Sports give it a shot again but since Madden is the only game in town, its the only option.

But this year, Panini has put out a great promotion if you wish to buy Madden.

Madden 12 Hall of Fame Edition features Marshall Faulk on the cover instead of Peyton Hillis in celebration of his Hall of Fame induction. It will be bronze embossed and look like this:

Pretty sexy if you ask me.

Buy Madden 12 Hall of Fame edition and pick up these goodies:

  • 1 of 4 autographed Panini Marshall Faulk cards celebrating his NFL Hall of Fame induction
  • A pack of Madden Ultimate Team cards to use on your ultimate team. A real pack. Did I mention they are all 99s?

Just like some of Panini’s products, inserted in one PS3 version and one XBOX 360 version is the hallowed 18 karat gold card featuring Marshall. Will Panini have more goodies for us that purchase the Hall of Fame edition?

There will only be 125,000 total copies of Hall of Fame edition so if you want a Marshall Faulk autograph and your pack of Ultimate Team cards you better act quickly. The added price bump for this edition is a total of $89.99. Not bad for a Hall of Fame autograph and the pack of cards, which in Madden would cost some extra dough anyway.

I know a certain Rams fan in this household that would love a Marshall Faulk autograph and it’s not me.

TTM Mail Day: Tony Dungy

Secretly, I love to get Through the Mail (TTM) autographs. I’ll be honest, I am usually too lazy to send out a picture and fill out postage and return postage to get it out to the post office. The wonderful thing about today’s celebrities and athletes is you can always find information online how to contact them through email.

Personally, when I want to email someone or send something TTM I use Sports Card Forum’s TTM Manager. You can register for Sports Card Forum here and then go to the TTM Manager and look up thousands of athletes and celebrities for free. Included is both mailing addresses and email addresses!

This is how I found Tony Dungy a couple of weeks ago. Well, the wait paid off and yesterday afternoon I received this.

A free autographed 8×10 by a Super Bowl winning coach and great mentor to people around the world. You can’t complain about that. The autograph is centered and is crisp and beautiful. It is not a pre-print or auto pen as I’ve compared it with others. It really is a great piece of memorabilia.

Thank you Coach Dungy and keep up the good work you are doing outside of football and I hope to see you on the sidelines again one day (especially back with my Buccaneers).

Show and Tell: 2006 Bowman Chrome Jon Lester Rookie Autograph

I thought adding a little show and tell post every now and then would be fun. I will post a card that I own, write about it, and just have fun with it.

This show and tell is about my favorite card that I own. My favorite card I own is not my most expensive card. It’s not the oldest card I own. For me, my favorite card is the card that means the most to me.

When I watched Jon Lester come up from the minors and pitch, I knew that he would be something special. He had a great live fastball and a nasty change and curveball. I was mentioning him with the likes of Johan Santana and everyone laughed at me. Maybe it was part of the hometown bias since I was a Red Sox fan, but I kept watching him and rooting for him. Then came the news.

Late in 2006 Jon Lester was diagnosed with lymphoma. I was shocked and surprised. Cancer in a 22 year old? I had just turned 21 and that hit me pretty hard. I couldn’t believe this pitcher I had been following through the minors was just diagnosed with cancer. I was thankful to see it was treatable but I was still sad for him. The days and months went by as I read every last piece of news about his recovery and attempts to kill the cancer inside him. I wanted to send a get well letter but his family wished to keep it private, so I just kept up the positive thoughts.

I had only one card of his at that time. I had a 2002 Upper Deck Prospect Premiers Jon Lester card. It was his first card made and really his true rookie card. But I wanted an autograph. I scoured eBay for a week or two while building up money and finally found one in my price range. For just under $20 at the time I grabbed this card, 2006 Bowman Chrome Jon Lester Rookie Autograph Refractor:

As you can see, it sits front and center in my baseball card case of my favorite cards. It’s been front and center in my collection since the day I received it.

Needless to say, Jon Lester made a full recovery from lymphoma and no one fan was happier then me. I was so excited to see him come back and pitch again one day. I remember watching the highlights of his return on ESPN and the way the crowd stood behind him with a standing ovation. I believe I was standing too, just watching the highlight. He was back! And boy was he ever. Within a year he would throw a no-hitter and clinch Game 4 of the 2007 World Series against the Rockies. All after beating cancer. How cool is that?

Last year, I finally had the opportunity to watch him pitch in person. For my birthday, I was given tickets to a Mariners – Red Sox game up in Seattle. The one in five chance to see him pitch paid off. I made sure I had a Jon Lester jersey to wear and went to the game, had great seats too. I was able to see in person why he is one of the premier pitchers in the league as he struck out 10 and gave up 1 run. The Seattle Mariners Sasquatch sat in front of me and wasn’t happy all game. But I was.

If Jon Lester could come back from cancer to do the things he did, what could the rest of us do?

Note: This post is loosely based off an article I wrote for Sports Card Forum in July 2010.
