Celebrating Pat Tillman on this Memorial Day

By now we should all know who Pat Tillman was.

By now we should all know the story that brought Pat Tillman from fame and fortune in the NFL to his tragic death in Afghanistan in 2004.

Today being Memorial Day will bring that story once again to the sports media and will surely be on ESPN numerous times throughout the day. Pat Tillman is just one of 1598 Americans who have died in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and one of the 2495 total deaths including all the countries fighting along side us. And Pat Tillman was  just one of the millions who have died for our country.

But this is a sports card blog and Pat Tillman was an athlete as well as a soldier.

Pat Tillman’s cards still are being bought, sold, and traded for today. He only has 5 cards made from his rookie season in 2001 and those are the only 5 that were ever made. Pat Tillman cards are a rarity. While they aren’t worth much monetarily, to some they are worth much more than that.

Here is a list of Pat Tillman cards:

  • 2001 Fleer Tradition
  • 2001 Fleer Tradition Glossy
  • 2001 NFL Showdown
  • 2001 UD MVP
  • 2001 UD Rookie FX

In my opinion, the most valuable or the most inspirational of his cards should be his 2001 Fleer Tradition card. Have you seen this card before? I think the insert set name says it all.

Unsung Heroes.

In the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals, Pat Tillman was an Unsung Hero. But in the United States for the US Army Rangers, Pat Tillman was a hero to them all.

Remember to keep all those who have died for our country and along side us in your thoughts on this day.

2011 Bowman Bryce Harper – The Hype Needs to Stop

Since everyone else is talking about 2011 Bowman Bryce Harper, I’m going to make a simple post about it.

I understand Bryce Harper was the number one pick and is projected to be a great hitter and a great player. But the prices for his cards are absolutely outrageous right now. Why are people paying such high prices for someone who hasn’t stepped foot in the Major Leagues yet? It’s like signing bonuses given to players after the draft or the guaranteed money the NFL gives newly drafted players. You are overpaying for someone who no one really knows how they will produce, it’s a giant gamble.

People are paying HUGE numbers on these freshly produced Bryce Harper sports cards. A simple eBay completed listings search will show you how much people are really selling these for. Just the other day, the 2011 Bowman Bryce Harper Red Version 1/1 was pulled and is expected to get between $7,000 and $10,000. Does this tune sound familiar? Anyone remember last year? Stephen Strasburg lit up collector’s eyes with money when they pulled one of his cards. Prices grew even more after his major league debut in which he struck out 13. Prices took a hit from reality when it was discovered Strasburg needed Tommy John elbow surgery. The Nationals GM just stated yesterday that Bryce Harper will not play in the majors this year. But prices are still out of control.

The way the hobby market works is that there is an initial price surge on cards for prospects when a product comes out. These prices will slowly come down as more and more come into the market. If he is still tearing up the minors, the price will finally flat line at a number, probably still kind of high. If he starts struggling, prices will dip a very small bit. The day he is called up the majors, the price will rise again and if he has a monstrous first game, prices will rise a bit more. The thing is, with Bryce Harper’s hype machine, prices may never reach that initial surge that people paid and are paying right now. That is unless he does something absolutely crazy like breaks DiMaggio’s hit streak or hits .400 his first season.

People are overpaying for Bryce Harper and the people lucky enough to pull his more rare cards are making a killing because of these idiots spending so much money. I thought everyone learned last year with everything surrounding Strasburg, but I guess not. This is just too crazy, it’s boggling the mind.

What Box To Break?

Well I was hoping to bring a nice surprise retail break today of Gypsy Queen since everyone else is doing it, but Fred Meyer did not have any Gypsy Queen to be had. Sorry, I’m not going to drive a half-hour to try Target or go get shot at my Wal-Mart 20 minutes away. So with no Gypsies or Queens to be had, I pocketed the money to wait. There was a plethora of 2010 blasters available at my disposal, but nothing I really wanted. Oh, and NO HOCKEY! Why do I have to live in a state without any hockey love. Our WHL team is in the finals and they can’t even fill the lower bowl at the Rose Garden. So, my attempt to bring Gypsy Queen has failed.

So that leaves me with pretending I had cards to open. I was stuck looking at previews of products soon to come out. Sure, I have a little money in my PayPal account but it’ll take forever to get a hobby box here. Plus, I WAS going to save the majority of it for a couple boxes of 2010-11 Upper Deck Ultimate hockey but it was delayed…again, like every other Upper Deck product. I think it was pushed another month to June 24th. Same thing happened when I wanted to buy The Cup last year. I had the money available and they kept pushing it back. I ended up spending the money on something else.

Okay, I’m done ranting on that.

But a good thing did happen today. After I got home from failing to find some GQ, I looked in my mailbox and received a package from Panini. In March, I had opened a box of Certified hockey up in Edmonton and did not receive the correct number of hits. I’ve never requested a replacement before as I figured it was just luck of the draw but this time I did. I sent in all the information and my replacement was received today. It was this:

2010-11 Certified Certified Champion Jordan Staal Auto #/50

Not bad for a replacement, wish it was his brother Eric though. It’s definitely better then nothing and I thank Panini for sending me the hit I was missing in my box.

Speaking of boxes, I really want to open some boxes. I want to open one hobby box from each sport and review it here, preferably using each of the major card companies. So I need ideas. I also wouldn’t mind just one from each card company so we can see what each one brings to the table.

I would like at least one Topps, one Panini, and one Upper Deck. If I have anything extra I could try some ITG too. What should I review? Let me know your thoughts.
