Site News: June 1st 2011 Was a Great Day

I like posting about accomplishments. The reason being when I look back on the blog and look at my posts I’ve made, I like to look back and just remember certain occasions. I guess I am just a very nostalgic person in general. Maybe you have to be a little nostalgic to be the type of sports card collector I am.

The day started off great. I opened up my email and received a nice letter from Adam of Dave & Adam’s Card World. This was completely unexpected, although I had noticed on my “site meter” that I had a few hits from Buffalo and Tonawanda. I was hoping I would catch the attention of DACW or Blowout on my recent comparison between the two companies. Well I definitely caught Adam’s eye and I received a nice letter from Adam. It looks like I’ll be interviewing him with some questions about DACW in the near future. Hopefully, when I am back in Connecticut I can take a nice drive up to Buffalo and tour their facilities. By the way, if anyone has any questions they would like to ask Adam, please email me or post a comment. I would like some questions other customers may have for one of the giants of the online hobby retailers. So yeah, definitely a good start to the day.

I ended up writing 3 posts throughout the day. Sometimes I just get so excited I want to post something that I see as important. So I just kept on writing. Next, I was also informed that Freedom Cardboard had their new blog system set up. Chris Gilmore, the owner, had set up WordPress blogs for anyone to use through their site. I thought it was a great opportunity to expand my viewers and get more input. So I created Sports Card Blog – Freedom Cardboard Edition. I’m not entirely sure what I am going to do with it yet, but I thought it would be fun to have some added commentary on things every once and awhile, especially in the baseball area where Freedom Cardboard is popular. Why not, right? Plus I’m sure I’ll hold exclusive Freedom Cardboard member contests over there on that blog because it’s so generously hosted by them. Check it out every once and awhile. I can’t guarantee anything over there, but why not give it a try?

Finally, after a ton of people asking me about the 2011 Upper Deck Legendary Cuts checklist I was able to get it emailed to me the night before the product came out. I’d like to thank Upper Deck and Chris Carlin for getting that out to me so I could share it with the hobby community. Oh, and share we did. Almost 600 people visited Sports Card Blog late yesterday afternoon and evening just to catch a glimpse at the “checklist heard around the world”. Obviously, a new record in a day for the site. I love numbers and just seeing them pile up is great for me and the hobby. People were questioning whether Upper Deck would have the guts to put the checklist out and they delivered. If you like historic baseball and Americana autographs I would totally check out 2011 Upper Deck Legendary Cuts.

So I would like to say thank you to the hobby community for embracing this blog and taking your time to read what I have to write and say. With that, I will be posting a contest either later today or tomorrow to thank everyone. Prizes will not be announced, but you will soon find out why. Don’t worry, I won’t be giving out redemptions. When I said I was building something for this site, I really was. I’ll leave you with one word until I post the contest. Spin.

Again, thanks. I’ll have some more hobby news shortly.

TTM Mail Day: Tony Dungy

Secretly, I love to get Through the Mail (TTM) autographs. I’ll be honest, I am usually too lazy to send out a picture and fill out postage and return postage to get it out to the post office. The wonderful thing about today’s celebrities and athletes is you can always find information online how to contact them through email.

Personally, when I want to email someone or send something TTM I use Sports Card Forum’s TTM Manager. You can register for Sports Card Forum here and then go to the TTM Manager and look up thousands of athletes and celebrities for free. Included is both mailing addresses and email addresses!

This is how I found Tony Dungy a couple of weeks ago. Well, the wait paid off and yesterday afternoon I received this.

A free autographed 8×10 by a Super Bowl winning coach and great mentor to people around the world. You can’t complain about that. The autograph is centered and is crisp and beautiful. It is not a pre-print or auto pen as I’ve compared it with others. It really is a great piece of memorabilia.

Thank you Coach Dungy and keep up the good work you are doing outside of football and I hope to see you on the sidelines again one day (especially back with my Buccaneers).

Minor Victory: Daily Views

This is a minor victory in the scheme of things, but a victory nonetheless.

Yesterday was the first day that this blog has reached over 100 views in a single day. It not only went over 100, it hit 133. In the grand scheme of things this is not very impressive. However, for a blog that is a month and a day old, it’s not bad considering I haven’t done much in the way of promotion other then links on forums and talking cards in other blogs.

So I would like to say “Thank You!” to everyone who has come to visit to read my stuff. It may not be anything ground breaking, but it is the information you need to stay up to date in the hobby. I try to keep it somewhat entertaining and informative and I hope I have done that for you.

In celebration, hopefully this weekend, I will be posting a contest for all to enjoy. It’s going to be something you have never seen before, and there will be a few winners if I can get enough entries. Stay tuned for that, as it will be pretty cool. I have some cool stuff including autographs, game used, and a mighty mystery box!  But how will the winners and prizes be chosen? You’ll have to wait and see.

So make sure you subscribe to this blog here on the left. Make sure you subscribe to our Facebook page. Follow us on Twitter. Subscribe on YouTube, and if you’re really inclined, sign up for our RSS Feed. Or even bookmark us, I don’t care.

This is only a minor victory and the first goal of a ton of goals. My next goal is to try and get the companies to send me boxes to review and then give away the contents to readers. That’s probably going to be one of the harder goals to achieve, but it will be done!

So keep reading and supporting this blog. Your loyalty will soon be rewarded.

May the mojo be with you!

Note: Don’t worry, I’ll get something important up for you all today. Just thought I would share the news.

Site News: 2 Boxes Arriving

Just a quick note:

My post for today will be later then usual. I have 2 boxes coming in today that I will be breaking and reviewing.

2010-11 SP Authentic hockey
2010-11 Panini Contenders hockey

Stay tuned.

Edit: Plus, new YouTube button at the top! Look for box breaks and contests posted there! Make sure you subscribe to keep up to date! While you’re up there, make sure you Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter! More exclamation points!

Site News: Incoming Boxes

For all you who enjoy box breaks of nice products, I have 3 boxes coming in. One from each of the 3 major league card companies.

- 1 Box 2010-11 Upper Deck SP Authentic Hockey

- 1 Box 2010-11 Panini Contenders Hockey

- 1 Box 2010 Topps Triple Threads Football

I wanted to do a “fight to the death” of Upper Deck and Panini hockey products. I think Contenders has a serious chance to take SP Authentic on as one of the hockey favorites of the year. So this will be a head to head product break and review.

I wanted to get Topps in on the madness so I also ordered a box of Triple Threads football. Probably the second best Topps football product of the year (after 5 Star) and just fit in my price range.

And finally, to add one more bit of madness to this, I ordered 2 of the boxes from Blowout and the other box from DA Card World. There will be blood! I will review both companies afterwards as well.

The Triple Threads should be here first, as Contenders isn’t released until Wednesday. At least, I think that’s how it works. I’m not sure if the product will be sent to arrive after release date or if they have to wait to send until street date.

So I hope you’re looking forward to the breaks and reviews. At least I have some time to think of more ways to make an idiot out of myself on camera.

Depending on when they come in and when I can get something totally awesome done for this site, I might be having some giveaways in celebration. Stay tuned.
